Although I cannot speak for every single teenage girl out there, being 18, I think I have the life experience needed to be able to say the do's and don't's of holiday shopping for your teen girl.

Do's:
Gift cards - Although it is not the most thoughtful gift out there, most teenage girls who enjoy shopping will appreciate gift cards. Honestly, most girls would rather have a gift card to a store they enjoy rather than some clothes that don't fit or aren't their style.
Here's some gift cards I would recommend:

Technology - A gift of technology could be anything from the latest iPhone to a Polaroid camera. Today's teens are incredibly into technology and most will greatly appreciate a new appliance to make their life simpler. The one piece of advice for this would be to talk to the parent or guardian of the teen you are buying the technology for before you make any purchases.
Here's some things I would recommend:

Jewelry - A simple necklace or bracelet can make a really good gift for any teen girl. The best part is that outside of rings, most jewelry doesn't come in different sizes so it is very easy to pick out. Stick to simple, more basic designs that can be worn with many outfits as opposed to jewelry with loud designs or bright colors.
Here's some sights I would recommend:

Blankets/pillows - Teenagers love to sleep. We are at a time in our lives where we are constantly tired and can never seem to rest enough. This is why a blanket or pillow is greatly appreciated. I would stick to basic colors so they don't clash with the rest of the teen's room. Also maybe include some instant hot chocolate packets to keep them extra warm.
Here's some places I would recommend:

Concert Tickets - Although it's not a gift that you can use right away, concert tickets are a great idea for any teen girl. Find out who their favorite artist is and snag a few tickets to their next tour. Just don't spend too much money.
Here's some sites I would recommend:

Don't's
Shoes - Unless you really know how certain shoes fit your teen, or which styles they like, I would stay away from shoes. Too often I have been gifted shoes that are far from correctly fitting or just aren't the kind of shoes I would wear. Unless you know exactly the shoe they want and which size would perfectly fit them, just get them a gift card. I would also apply this principal for clothes

Scented Items - Teen girls love their perfumes, candles, and soaps, but we have all be gifted scents that we hate or that give us a headache. Not to mention that a good portion of teen girls are not allowed to have candles due to the fact that we don't want our houses to burn down. Chances are if you know their favorite scent, they probably already have too many products in that scent. You would be better off buying them a gift card to go pick out their own scents.

Anything they liked last year - Teens are at a time of constant change in their lives so chances are, if they liked it last year, they wont this year. Unless they specify in any way that they still want it, assume they don't.

Overall, shopping for your teen girl depends heavily on how much you know them. Sure, theses tips may help, but asking for a wishlist or spending time getting to know them will make holiday shopping loads easier.
